Flipping the switch–some aimless Monday rambling

An interesting thing happened last week that has me thinking about loyalty conflicts. I tend to think I’m a pretty loyal person. When I mentally “mark” someone as a friend, they get my loyalty and support in spades until we fall apart in some manner (and sometimes, even after). That, to me, is the core difference between a friend and a casual or “friendly” acquaintance. For one I reserve my strong emotions and my energy. The other gets very, very little. Last Tuesday, I went home with Luke to chill before the weekly Thorn meeting. (This way, I would only have to arrange a ride home.) So Luke and I…

    Weekend update

Friday’s weightlifitng: Bench: 15 pounds (6.80 kg), 1 set to failure, 16 reps (move to twenty-five pounds next time)Lat pulldown: 132 pounds (49.0 kg), 1 set nearly to failure, 12 reps (move to next weight)Shoulder press: 10 pounds (4.54 kg), 1 set to failure, 10 repsTricep pushdown: 48 pounds (21.8 kg), 1 set to failure, 10 reps I did better on triceps this time, and I’m getting better as being able to isolate the feeling of the muscles being worked (like actually feeling the tricep pushdown in my triceps specifically, rather than a general shaky fatigue). My shoulders are still my weak point in bench pressing, but the worked feeling…

Experiment, experiment, study–oh, wait. No glassware.

That was actually Wednesday, Thursday, and today. So I’m cleaning glassware all day so I can do a study to refine our methods. I want to come in tomorrow to do the study so I can have an entire day with the lab all to myself and not have to fight over elbow space, but policy states I need a babysitter, and I don’t have one. I got new running shoes today (not particularly cute, but they are very comfy), and I’m fighting my desire to run a week’s worth before Sunday, because that would just do no good. I simply have much excess energy I need to burn off…

    Ouch, ouch.

Walked a few miles both yesterday and today due to shin splints. New shoes are en route, however. I ordered a pair of Saucony Grid Aura TR 6’s yesterday that should arrive tomorrow. Weightlifting on Tuesday went well: Bench: 15 pounds (6.80 kg), 1 set to failure, 12 repsLat pulldown: 134 pounds, 1 set, 10 repsShoulder press: 10 pounds (4.54 kg), 1 set to failure, 8 repsTricep pushdown: 48 pounds (21.8 kg), 1 set to failure, 8 reps I had a lot of trouble keeping good form on the tricep pushdown…

    Havin’ some bebes

I had two, possibly three, babies yesterday. I ran a photolysis experiment on the sulfamethoxazole with titanium dioxide for six hours and ran samples from various time points on the HPLC. The tentative results? Fifty-three percent degradation from a lamp we thought put out no UV light (and thus shouldn’t have been able to drive a reaction much at all). There were two definite products formed, although we haven’t identified them yet, and we may have to do a bit of tinkering to get good isolation of these since they’re very polar. These are my babies. The first comes off the column just before two minutes, and the second after…
