    All about the Guide

The Thorn has a sex book. Guide to Getting It On (Fourth Ed.) was sent to the office (with Luke’s name all over it) by the publisher for us to review. It’s an eight hundred page tome, complete with illustrations, punny chapter names, and a ridiculous amount of humor, intentional and otherwise. Just this week, I have probably gone through a good third of it (at least). My stomach muscles are killing me from laughing so hard. The book is completely informal, using slang all over the place, yet is not the slightest bit crude or crass. It includes complete and scientific anatomical descriptions, and the ideas presented in the…

    Three things on my mind.

(Well, there certainly aren’t just three things on my mind, but my newspaper readings haven’t been giving me much to bite on, lately. And I just feel like rambling, even if I have nothing to say.) Some days, I am really glad that I can be assertive. A future roommate of mine, H., has a major problem with confrontation. She’s also having major roommate problems. She came into my room this afternoon, frustrated and crying about her roommate’s latest transgression; Kitty Cat, Bridget, and I all attempted to help. It was interesting: I could predict everyone’s suggestions based on their personalities. Bridget wanted H. to start hiding the things her…

    Good things to know

Apparently, radiator hoses decay from the inside out, and should be checked every couple of years. Twenty-one year old radiator hoses are bound to fail. Along with the old people never driving the car anywhere (a plus), they never had the damn thing serviced (a minus). Coolant stinks, and the odor lingers. Nikolai likes to be chauffeured, and his car (some old Volvo) is hella fun to drive. A car that easily goes above 80 miles an hour without getting all “floaty”? Hell, yes… A car left on the side of an interstate overnight will be muddy and have an “Abandoned Vehicle” sticker on it, left by the police. I…

    Museum Day!

I like paintings. When I got to Mae’s this morning, she asked me what I liked, and what I wanted to see at the museums today. I told her I wanted to see anything and everything, because I’m too ignorant to have a preference. She was willing to oblige. The only areas open at the IMA are the European and African areas, due to construction. We spent the first couple of hours in the European section, where I found myself lost in the minute details of many of the paintings, studying proportions, musculature, and hands. I found myself shying away from more Romantic and impressionist art and the dotted art…

Steve Jones’ Y: The Descent of Men

In Y: The Descent of Men, Jones gives a wide-ranging account of maleness, inlcuding everything from baldness to hormones to erectile dysfunction to basic physiology. This book is rather well written. It may seem odd to apply a stylistic analysis to a book that is supposed to be scientific, but that is the first thing I noticed. The book is readible, and for non-fiction, that takes some doing. Jones’ style is relaxed, yet informative, and British humor shows throughout the book. I will admit that this book wasn’t what I was expecting. I read this book for a Gender Issues (Human Sexuality) course, and was expecting it to make an…
