Mo’ money, mo’ problems: a retirement app idea
I mentioned this obliquely a couple of weeks ago, but I’m wigging out a bit about retirement. In 39 years I will be 65, and I don’t have solid plans with numbers behind them. Socking away $5k a year into an IRA just isn’t enough. Back in the day, I loved, loved, loved Microsoft Money’s Lifetime Planner. It asked you all sorts of questions about when you were going to have a kid and how much you were saving in various accounts, their expected returns, how much you thought you needed to live on in retirement, etc. Then it crunched the numbers and gave you a big graph showing your…

Quasi-daily linkage
Facebook: just don’t understand – Yelp Accused of Extortion | Threat Level | Wired.com – I don't use sites like Yelp very often, but I have to admit that this is a pretty clever scam that they seem to be running. They've probably gotten away with it for a while if they're actually doing it. What We Learned from the SuperBowl Ads – The Pursuit of Harpyness – The good kind of snarky. "Women and Doritos are of equal value, to be coveted by some men (skeevy would-be boyfriends) and protected by others (aw, cute little boys!), who are their rightful owners." Amazing Alternative Interfaces That Will Change Our Lives…

Quasi-daily linkage
My God—it’s full of unicorns! – Meta Stack Overflow – This is hilarious. I'm going to have to play around with this in WP. Dynamic Dummy Image Generator – DummyImage.com – C/o my darling, this is a pretty cool way to generate placeholder images. Alex Payne — On the iPad – This is the best damn commentary on the iPad that I've seen yet. A Toronto Data Guy, I want privacy because I break the law – This is a good essay on privacy and how that related to purposefully and accidentally breaking the law. I like that he doesn't once go into copyright violation (which isn't law breaking, although…

WinRAR to 7zip
I finally got sick to death of WinRAR’s nag screen when I loaded or manipulated archives and installed 7zip. I’m pleased with it so far, even though I had to install a slightly older version to get integration with WinMerge.

Tastee (del.icio.us) links!
These are my links for June 15th through June 18th: xkcd – A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language – By Randall Munroe – Everyone probably already reads xkcd, but I loved this one. "DAR: A Super Girly Top Secret Comic Diary" By Erika Moen – This whole comic series is amazing, but this particular comic (especially panel #4) had me rolling. I'd probably be arrested if I had a penis, too. An important issue? « I?m just saying? – This author (professor?) and a group of students set up an exhibit exploring white privilege at Seattle Pacific University. I always love discussions of white privilege for the different…
