Enemy combatants, xkcd, and male bathroom etiquette

“Congress’ shameful retreat from American values” (from Prometheus 6) is a rather shamefully emotionally manipulative piece, but was the first I’d heard about the “[tag]enemy combatant[/tag]” proposal being passed by the Senate. This makes me sad. This kind of shit is why I’m voting in a midterm election year. [tag]Xkcd[/tag]’s “Cryptography is just too cute. I just had to go listen to [tag]Missy Elliot[/tag]’s “Work It” afterwards. “Male Restroom Etiquette” is one of the coolest uses of The Sims 2 I’ve seen (from Tiffany Brown)

    On podcasts

Ah, podcasts. These things have saved my sanity throughout the summer. Some of these are worthy of linkage and sharing. Not all–luckily, since I listen to entirely too many–but some. First, the [tag]Performance Poetry[/tag] podcast I mentioned a couple of weeks ago. Amazing stuff. Another favorite of mine is Next Big Hit. The announcer kills me and the music played probably won’t be the next big hit. That doesn’t make it bad, though, really. It tends to be pop [tag]music[/tag] (and there’s plenty of that new rock stuff I can’t stand), but has recently increased the number of R & B and rap artists played. A fun trick is to…

    Hot music.

All I need is a mic and my rhyme book. — “All I Need”, J. Lang feat. J. Gomes Thanks to some awesome Creative Commons licensing, I have the pleasure of permitting the downloads of three hot tracks: “All I Need is a Rhyme Zook“, mixed by The Law (song’s page) “Cuckoo“, mixed by Sammy Panorama (song’s page) “Atractive“, mixed by Not Lisa (song’s page) I’ve become hooked on ccMixter this past week–it’s all Creative Commons music mixed and redistributed. They’ve got streams for different styles of music, and it’s all searchable and (mostly, I think) downloadable. Good stuff.

    Magic in my hands.

“Do you feel the magic in my hands when I touch and rub you the right way…?” Johnny Gill, “Rub You the Right Way”. I know it’s a good day when I: Have just so little sleep that everything is funny. I mean everything. Spend five solid minutes in lab laughing at my partner’s reaction to Oranges and Lemons’ “Soramimi Cake”. I almost pissed my pants. (Hey, then we could have collected it and analyzed un-moldy urine!) Give a loud-ass whoop of joy in the middle of the hallway when my lab partner and I were told we could just throw away the plastic bottles (formerly containing urine) that we’d…
