Minor bug fix release of d20 Spell Lists – v0.1.4293

Downloadable from The Charon Sheet. (Also, I’m currently reading The Principles of Beautiful Web Design so’s I can make TCS less sucky and more purdy. Expect design changes there as I learn how to do this crap from scratch.)

Only two issues fixed, but they were kinda show-stoppers for the affected folks. Details on the issues fixed.

d20 3.5 SRD Spell Lists: First Beta

So I’m in a D&D 3.5 campaign now. And I’m playing a Druid, which is kinda exciting–it’s the first time I’ve played a Druid at a high enough level that I can shapeshift, and I just tipped 5th level on Sunday. (Campaigns always fizzle out early…)

Anyway, the campaign is a hodgepodge of standard D&D and Sandstorm, and summoning restrictions by the GM mean that my spell list involves a fair bit of swapping out that’s a little annoying to manage. For instance, I’m using Sandstorm’s “Desiccate” instead of “Summon Nature’s Ally II”, since I can’t summon.

Since Druids are the type to prepare a few spells per day from a large list of available spells, I needed a quick way to see all of my available options without flipping through two sourcebooks and my swap list at the table. Then I wanted to avoid having the jotted down short-hand description of the spell that I refresh every “day” as I try out new spells.

Pain in the ass.

A bit of Googling lead me to conclude that with the advent of D&D 4e, many of the 3.5e resources… disappeared. And by disappeared, I mean:

All files withdrawn at the request of Wizards of the Coast.

Mass Effect: How Can I Go Back to Fallout 3?

I can’t imagine myself playing Mass Effect three years ago, but I’m thoroughly awed now.

Cover of Mass Effect.Greg supplied me with a video of Mass Effect‘s heroine being a badass last week and I mentioned that it convinced me to install and fire up the game. Excellent choice.

Unfortunately, I’m not done with Fallout 3 yet, and ME is such a better game.

Mostly.

That is, if you leave off the vehicle driving, which often ends up with me careening up the sides of roads, cliffs, and mountains like a drunken BMXer.

Too Human Was… Too Human

Sorry, I really couldn’t come up with anything wittier than that.

I finished Too Human about a month ago at this point, I think.

Let’s celebrate that for a moment. Given my propensity for games like Sims, GalCiv 2, and Civ 4, getting to finish a game is always a miracle.

Guy totally warned me about some of the game’s disappointments, so I went in with eyes open.

It was… alright. Kinda fun early on. Really frustrating later. I want more, but not more of what was in Too Human. (I’m restarting Fallout 3–which I never finished–as the balm for my ache.)

A couple of nights ago, Greg and I enumerated about 15 flaws in the game. Here are some of the highlights, ordered by their importance to me. I played through with the Berserker class, which is something of a glass cannon: very fast, but not a huge damage dealer and pretty fragile.

Like Too Human, Not Like Devil May Cry 4

Me, playing the XBox.So… console systems aren’t so bad after all. But I need game suggestions.

I spent some time this weekend getting more comfortable with our new XBox and PS3. I asked Greg to find me a Diablo-like (because I was driving), and he made me a short list of games to demo, warning me that I probably wasn’t going to find anything really like Diablo/Torchlight (which I have on PC). Their “click-click-click” gameplay style may not translate well to consoles.

His list?

  • Too Human
  • Fable II or III
  • Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

And maybe some others. A not-so-short list, really.

I grabbed and fired up the Too Human demo, picked the Berserker class, and… wow. Really fun. Fast, smooth, easy controls, interesting background (cybernetic Norse gods!), potentially interesting story, and graphically beautiful. I loved zipping from enemy to enemy seamlessly.
