Star Wars RPG
I never liked Star Wars. I thought the movies were lame — or rather, the characters in the movies were lame. The gritty universe was potentially interesting, but completely unexplored in the movies. By “movies”, I mean the original three and the first of the new ones with the kid Anakin. So when my local gamemaster suggested that we start a Star Wars game (using the old d6-based system, not the new d20 system), I was dubious. I was more than dubious. He convinced me that we would be playing in a “saga” (or era) where Skywalker and company wouldn’t be present. So I said I’d be up for trying…

For the gamers in the crowd
*looks around* …Of which there may be very few… Others may still enjoy a funny story without detailed knowledge of the system. Since being in Charlotte, I’ve been experimenting with a few different D & D campaigns, all of which are GM’ed by people older than 34 years old. I now suspect this is a bad idea for someone who actually likes D & D 3.5 and wants to play in a real 3.5 campaign, rather than a 3.0 campaign with the inclusion of monks. …With a communicative and helpful GM. Anyway, here’s a conversation between me and WO that had me rolling. It’s a bit edited to remove some…

On game length and content
I caught myself writing a post-in-a-comment over at Ludus Novus, and figured it’d be best to respond here instead. *stretch* Ah, elbow room. As a quick recap (although you should listen to the podcast–it’s short), WO is addressing the relationship between game length and depth and quality of content. His conclusion seems to be that there really isn’t much correlation between length and game depth (although there’s certainly potential); in addition, games don’t easily fall into the novel vs. short story genres in terms of characterization styles. This is me just shooting off some shit, but here’s a thought: I wonder whether a lengthy game (leaving aside series) really can…

Role-playing geekiness!
So I’m playing in a [tag]Palladium[/tag] with Jed, Guy, and several others, run by Tookie. In fact, there are eight players. We started earlier in the term, but had to restart when Jed turned into a psycho pyro. 🙂 There was a fight. Everyone lost (in one way or another) and Tookie was sad. I’d been hankering to play in a campaign all summer, and I finally got my wish. Having eight players is rather intimidating–I’m curious to see how things work out in the long term with the jangle of overlapping voices and actions. Combat’s really easy, but normal things–shopping in towns, etc., can get confusing. The Palladium system…

Just one of them days
I got a physical today, and got some surprising (but not more than vaguely scary or bad) news. My car’s “Check Engine” light turned on… and is staying on. Car problems are sadly expensive, and this one (whatever it is) will also require me to be at the shop at 08:00, and possibly to miss class and more work. I got weighed today. Frown. WO and I are both short on sleep, so we’re tired, emotional, and grumpy. Did I mention that car problems are expensive? I didn’t meditate today. I didn’t eat well today. I didn’t get any exercise today. I’m sore as hell from yesterday’s weight-lifting–my first since…
