Lack of food and sleep do not a good run make

I only made it about 46 minutes this morning before my body simply quit on me: light-headedness, light headache, feet not wanting to leave the ground, aching neck, shoulders, and arms. The problem with Sunday and Monday morning runs is that [more than likely] I won’t have eaten since lunch the previous day, since the cafeteria on campus is closed. This makes sustaining energy a little difficult. Combine this with a strong desire to simply sleep for one morning without an alarm, and this can make runs into interesting exercises in willpower. Morning runs are still best, though. Most of the bugs are still sleeping (or whatever bugs do when…

    Pulled vs. simply sore

My legs feel no better, despite another half-hour run and more very careful stretching. I think my hamstrings are past sore and into injured, because the pain is lingering and a little sharper than simple soreness. The good news is that the running isn’t making it worse. I think I’m going to stick with half-hour runs until I regain full mobility, then move times back up to 50 minutes or an hour. Shorter runs will also give me time to nail down school schedule stuff without feeling like I need to be out for an hour in the morning.

    Hobbling along

I think I actually learned what a “recovery run” is today. I spent about 10 hours building my deck in my dorm room two days ago, and have been sore and increasingly immobile since. Particularly, my hamstrings are tighter than steel geetar strings, and I’m limping and hobbling/waddling just to walk around. I haven’t been able to move around enough to warm up sufficiently to stretch, so it’s just getting worse. So this morning, after five days off from running, I did a nice, slow, easy thirty minute run. I didn’t push myself overly, I just wanted to move for a half-hour to work some of the kinks out. The…

    Short speedwork run.

I’m not so much into structured intervals or fartleking, but I ran intervals today, with a “base” pace of 12:00 min/mile. I ran two 10:54 min/mile intervals (five minutes) and two 10:00 min/mile intervals (three minutes). I made a point to watch myself in the mirror today. I figure the more I stare at my legs, the more I will grow to like them. Welcome to Lissa Leg Lovin’ 101. We meet four times a week, for about an hour at a time.

    Good comeback

After a two day hiatus (although one was spent touring UNC), I picked up today with a nice, easy 50-minute run at a 12:14 pace on the treadmill. I almost didn’t go, because of a variety of personal issues going on, but ultimately I decided I wanted the release. And I’m glad I went. I am, however, anxious to get back on campus and in a real gym. I am planning on cutting back running somewhat (maybe four days a week, and hour each time) because of the persistant fatigue, and doing some crosstraining (elliptical + rowing machine) on the other days of the week. And I’d like to go…
